Free Online Credit Reports and Identity Theft
Having bad credit can cost you a place to live and a job. Try moving into an apartment or buying a boat and not being able to show good credit. How can you change credit without using credit? You can't, which is why you should check your credit report all the time.
One survey shows that 79% of credit reports have errors. It was found that 25% had severe errors which would cause lenders to refuse you credit or employers to refuse you a job. A bad credit report can even cause the bank to refuse to open an account.
There are online credit scams that claim they will give you a free credit report. Be aware of them. Read the fine print. There are also credit report companies that give you a free credit report if you sign up for their credit repair service. Your credit is something that cannot be taken for granted so make sure you get the best report from the "big three." By law, they are supposed to grant you a free credit report each year, but it is a hassle to write to each of them.
There is also a growing problem with identity theft. It is recommended to order a copy of your report every six months to a year. If your wallet has been stolen or you think you left your credit card receipt at a gas station, there are many ways people take advantage of you. Always double check your receipts, even if they are for a small amount.
