This is a real concern and should be discussed with your family before the house is put on the market. Here are some suggestions:

Never show the home alone or let anyone in your family show it alone. Have a neighbor come over if you need another person.

Make everyone set up an appointment. Get their phone numbers in case you need to reschedule and make sure they function. Be suspicious of buyers who must see it now.

Let the neighbors know you are selling your home. Ask them on a regular basis to see if anyone has been around the house when you�re not there. Criminals will use an open house, or walk through to pose as a potential buyer in order to scope out properties to burglarize later.

Also, be sure to ask if they have been pre-qualified by a lender. If not, having them talk to a reliable loan officer will help screen out the real potential buyers from people with ulterior motives, or buyers who cannot afford to purchase your home.
