I want to sell my home myself (FSBO), but I am worried about the safety of my house and my family
Stan G. in Alexandria, VA asks:
The real estate market I live in is still hot. I want to sell my home myself (FSBO), but I am worried about the safety of my house and my family. Any suggestions?
Stan,
This is a real concern and should be discussed with your family before the house is put on the market. Here are some suggestions:
- Never show the home alone or let anyone in your family show it alone. Have a neighbor come over if you need another person.
- Make everyone set up an appointment. Get their phone numbers in case you need to reschedule and make sure they function. Be suspicious of buyers who must see it now.
- Let the neighbors know you are selling your home. Ask them on a regular basis to see if anyone has been around the house when you’re not there. Criminals will use an open house, or walk through to pose as a potential buyer in order to scope out properties to burglarize later.
Also, be sure to ask if they have been pre-qualified by a lender. If not, having them talk to a reliable loan officer will help screen out the real potential buyers from people with ulterior motives, or buyers who cannot afford to purchase your home.
